The long run

Running a long way can be a painful experience, as captured in this poem...

I'm tired now, with nothing left to burn,
There's more miles to go, despite the ones passed,
I'm thirsty, but that's not my main concern.

I find my strength fading at every turn,
The aches and pains in my limbs have amassed,
I'm tired now, with nothing left to burn.

Whether I'll finish is hard to discern,
I'll try to keep going, if I can last,
I'm thirsty, but that's not my main concern.

If I get this right there's medals to earn,
But if I can get it wrong I'll be aghast,
I'm tired now, with nothing left to burn.

I'll fight and fight some more to find an upturn,
Why I do this, I've never thought to ask,
I'm thirsty, but that's not my main concern.

My loved ones are awaiting my return,
I can only hope I'm up to the task,
I'm tired now, with nothing left to burn,
I'm thirsty, but that's not my main concern.
